Background
Soph was orphaned as a kit; according to family lore, her adoptive father found her during one of his business trips and brought her home to Ul’dah, to the mingled delight and confusion of his wife and daughters. As a Viera growing up in a loving Lalafell family, Soph often felt conflicted between feeling like she didn’t quite belong, and feeling guilty for those feelings.Growing up, Soph longed to see the world outside of Ul’dah, but opportunities were limited, especially with the various wars and conflicts raging across Eorzea. In her late teens (and during one of the more peaceful interludes) she finally convinced her parents to let her study with the Arcanists Guild in Limsa Lominsa. Unfortunately, the actual study and practice required to learn the Arcane arts proved far less interesting than daydreaming about being an Arcanist had been. One day, a Gleaner on his way back to Old Sharlayan came through during her shift at Mealvaan’s Gate. His stories of the far off lands he had journeyed to were so fascinating that she stayed past her shift to listen to them. By the time the Gleaner finally left with his approved cargo manifest, Soph was determined to become a Gleaner herself. After writing a hasty letter of resignation to her Guild Leader and a sending a hastier apology to her parents, she sold her Arcanist textbooks to buy a ticket to Old Sharlayan. While studying for her Gleaner qualifying exams, Soph works part time at her friend Amy's bar, McTaru's.
